Meditation has a number of benefits for the emotional health of a person. A simple meditation exercise can help a person get over his or her anger without strong outbursts. It also works for other negative emotions that a person would like to get rid of. Meditation can assist the person in sorting out his or her thoughts and emotions.
Defining meditation
Meditation is a process in which the body and the mind are at a relaxed state. This may be done through breathing exercises, yoga poses, and prayer. Many religions all over the world base their practice on meditation. With the acceptance of alternative therapy into the mainstream medical practice, the role of meditation in solving behavioral issues and in physical healing has been recognized.
How do our thoughts form
To better understand the use of meditation in getting rid of negative emotions, one should understand the thought process. Thoughts have a simple life cycle - they begin, they stay for some time, and then they disappear. There are three types of thoughts - the positive, the negative, and the neutral.
Your control of a thought starts as the thought begins. If the thought is good or if it makes you happy, you can allow it to stay for some time. This will then lead to other thoughts of the same nature.
Recognizing negative thoughts
Negative thoughts are the sources of negative emotions. Just like with positive thoughts, you have to recognize them as they begin. However, negative thoughts should not stay long within our minds.
Of the negative thoughts, the most common is anger. It is also the most destructive of all negative emotions. According to a Buddhist belief, one action that came out of anger can destroy a number of good deeds.
Some people believe that anger is not something that can be controlled. Once a person or an event provokes you into anger, there is nothing that can be done - that you don't have a choice.
Deciding not to dwell on the negative thoughts
As the angry thoughts begin to form, you need to decide not to grasp them. When you let these negative thoughts linger, they will turn into negative emotions, which are more difficult to control.
Deciding to abandon negative thoughts is different from suppressing the angry emotion. As negative thoughts begin, they are easier to get rid of. Once they develop into anger, getting rid of them may involve suppression, which is not good for the emotional health.
As you try to get rid of the negative thoughts, you can practice the breathing exercises that are involved in meditation. Closing your eyes also help you in clearing your mind.
Anger is a learned response. And in order to get rid of anger, you need to unlearn this. By constantly repeating breathing and meditation techniques, you will soon learn how to get rid of anger and negative thoughts when they start.
